What to know before you schedule on Bluesky
Bluesky has a few rules that catch people out when posts are prepared in advance. Postial checks them before the post is due, not after it fails.
Use an app password, never the main password
Bluesky lets you create app passwords under Settings → App Passwords. Create one named Postial for each client account. Postial signs in with a fresh session for each operation and does not store session tokens. If you revoke the app password, publishing stops until you reconnect with a new one.
300 characters, links included
Bluesky counts graphemes, so an emoji or accented letter counts as one character. Postial counts the same way and includes any link you attach in the total, so a post that fits in the composer also fits on Bluesky.
Images: four per post, 1 MB each
Bluesky accepts up to four images per post and downloads each one at no more than 1 MB. Postial uploads up to 5 MiB per file, so a large photo can upload fine and still be too big for Bluesky. In that case the image is left out, the text is published, and the post shows a warning. Add image descriptions in the composer; Postial forwards them to Bluesky as alt text.
Links become clickable
URLs in the post text are published as clickable links. Postial does not generate a link preview card, so write the text so it makes sense without one.
Running several Bluesky accounts without mixing them up
One brand per client
Each client gets a brand with its own connected channels and timezone. Starter includes 3 brands, Agency 15. When you connect, Postial shows the handle it signed in as, so you can confirm it is the right account.
Custom PDS handles work
Enter the handle or the account email as the identifier. If the account lives on its own PDS rather than bsky.social, use the handle so Postial can find the right server.
Retries that do not double-post
Each post gets a stable record key. Before creating the post, Postial checks whether that record already exists, so an automatic retry after a timeout does not publish a second copy.
How to schedule Bluesky posts with Postial
1. Create an app password
In Bluesky, open Settings → App Passwords and create one named Postial. Copy it once; Bluesky will not show it again.
2. Connect the account to a brand
In Postial, open Brands, pick the client's brand and choose Connect a channel → bluesky. Enter the handle and the app password, then check the displayed handle.
3. Write, schedule and follow the result
Compose the post, add up to four images, pick a time in the brand's timezone and save. For a campaign, use Plan several posts to prepare up to 200 rows from a CSV. After the time passes, check the post status for the published link or any warning.
It publishes single posts. It does not create threads or reply chains.
It does not upload video. Images only: JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
It does not build link preview cards.
It does not resize images. Keep files under 1 MB for Bluesky.
A scheduled time is not a delivery guarantee. The worker runs periodically, and Bluesky itself can delay or reject a post.
Networks and their conditions change. The current status of every network is on the roadmap.
Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule posts for several Bluesky accounts from one login?
Yes. Connect each account to the brand it belongs to. Starter covers 3 brands for one user; Agency covers 15 brands and 5 users. Each connection uses its own app password.
Why does Postial ask for an app password?
App passwords are Bluesky's way of giving a tool access without sharing the main password. You can revoke one at any time in Bluesky without changing your login. Never paste the main password into Postial.
What happens if my post is over 300 characters?
The composer counts characters the way Bluesky does, including an attached link, and shows when a Bluesky channel is over the limit. Shorten the text before scheduling, or send a longer version to Mastodon or Telegram, which allow more.
What happens if a scheduled Bluesky post fails?
Temporary failures retry automatically after 1, 4, 15 and 60 minutes, with at most five attempts. An expired app password needs you to reconnect. The post shows the error in plain language. See publishing reliability.
Can a client approve Bluesky posts before they go out?
On Agency, yes. Request approval when you schedule and send the client a review link. The post is held until they approve. See client approval.
